ABOUT THE OBSERVATORY

The European Microfinance Observatory is an initiative of the European Microfinance Network — built jointly with national contributors, supported by EU institutions, and designed to serve everyone who works on inclusive finance in Europe.

For more than two decades, microfinance in Europe has grown into a sector with very real impact — 156 institutions, €4 billion in outstanding portfolio, 1.2 million active clients — and yet its knowledge base remains scattered across national networks, EU programmes, academic journals and policy briefs that rarely speak to each other. Practitioners struggle to compare what works across borders, regulators lack a single reference for how the sector is structured country by country, and researchers spend more time reconciling sources than analysing them.

The European Microfinance Observatory was conceived to close that gap. The idea is simple: consolidate the dispersed knowledge on microfinance ecosystems, regulation, funding instruments and case studies in one open, neutral, continuously updated platform — and make it free for everyone who needs it. Researchers can cite a single source. Regulators can compare frameworks side by side. MFIs can discover peers and benchmark practices. Funders can map the landscape before committing capital.

The Observatory is curated by the European Microfinance Network with the help of national contributors — practitioners and researchers in each country who keep the country-level content accurate and current. It is not a directory, not a marketing platform, and not a registry. It is a working library, growing and improving as the sector itself evolves.

Continuously updated as policies change, programmes launch, and new evidence emerges. Country profiles are kept current by national contributors who know the ground.

SUPPORTED BY EU INSTITUTIONS

The Observatory is supported by the European Commission, through the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL) and the financial instruments deployed under the InvestEU programme. EU-level backing recognises microfinance as a strategic tool for inclusive economic recovery, employment, and social cohesion — and ensures that the platform serves the broader European policy framework, not the interests of any single actor.

The Observatory does not deliver financial instruments or policy decisions. Its role is to make sector knowledge readable, comparable, and usable — for the EU institutions that fund inclusion, for the national authorities that regulate it, and for the practitioners who deliver it on the ground.
